AirPods Pro 1 vs Pro 2 vs Pro 3: what’s the difference?

AirPods Pro 1, Pro 2 and Pro 3 share the same basic in-ear design, but they are different generations with different model numbers, charging cases and replacement parts. If you are buying a replacement earbud or case, identifying the generation is more important than judging by appearance.

The quickest rule: do not mix generations.

A Pro 1, Pro 2 and Pro 3 earbud may look similar, but replacement parts should be matched by the exact model number and generation.

How can you tell them apart?

AirPods Pro 1

Pro 1 uses Apple’s H1 chip and the original AirPods Pro controls. The earbuds use a force sensor on the stem. The charging case does not have the built-in speaker and lanyard loop associated with later Pro 2 cases.

AirPods Pro 2

Pro 2 moved to the H2 chip and added touch control on the stem, including volume adjustment by swiping. The charging case can include a speaker and lanyard loop. Pro 2 also exists in Lightning and USB-C versions, which is particularly important when replacing a charging case or earbud.

AirPods Pro 3

Pro 3 is the newest generation. It keeps the H2 chip but adds newer health and hearing features, including heart-rate sensing, and offers a revised fit with more ear-tip sizes. Apple rates the earbuds and charging case to IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance.

Model numbers are the safest way to identify them

Appearance can help, but the A-number printed on the earbud or shown in your iPhone settings is the most reliable check.

AirPods Pro 1: A2083 and A2084. Charging case A2190.
AirPods Pro 2 Lightning: the ReSet replacement options use A2698 and A2699 with case A2700.

Can AirPods Pro generations use the same replacement parts?

Do not assume they can. Match the generation, side and model number before ordering. Pro 1, Pro 2 and Pro 3 are separate product generations, and Pro 2 also has Lightning and USB-C families that need additional checking.
