AirPods Pro 2 Lightning vs USB-C: what’s the difference?

There are two AirPods Pro 2 model families: the original Lightning version introduced in 2022 and the USB-C version introduced in 2023. They look very similar, so model numbers are the safest way to identify which version you have before ordering a replacement part.

Match the model, not just the name.

Both versions are called AirPods Pro 2. When buying a replacement earbud or case, check the model numbers on your existing AirPods and case first.

AirPods Pro 2 model numbers

Version AirPods model family Charging case Year
AirPods Pro 2, Lightning A2931, A2699, A2698 A2700, Lightning 2022
AirPods Pro 2, USB-C A3047, A3048, A3049 A2968, USB-C 2023

The easiest visible difference is the charging port

The 2022 MagSafe case uses a Lightning port. The 2023 MagSafe case uses USB-C. Both cases also support compatible wireless charging, so the cable port is the clearest quick visual check.

Why the earbud model number still matters

If you are replacing a left or right AirPod, do not rely only on the case connector. Check the model number printed on the underside of the AirPod itself. The USB-C and Lightning releases use different earbud model-number families.

Where to find the numbers

For the earbuds, look on the underside of each AirPod for an A-number. For the charging case, open the lid and check the information printed on the underside. You can also view connected AirPods information in Bluetooth settings on an iPhone or iPad.

What should you choose when buying a replacement?

Choose the ReSet listing that matches the exact model family you already own. This avoids ordering a part based only on the product name “AirPods Pro 2,” which is not specific enough on its own.
